Congratulations SAGE Doctoral Graduates

We at CITE are proud of the graduates of the SAGE Doctoral Program, cohort 1, who presented their work at the colloquium last week, and graduated with their doctoral degrees. The Council of School Supervisors and Administrators was on hand to congratulate its members. This program represents a partnership with CITE, SAGE, and the CSA that we are happy to be a part of. The following is CITE’s Executive Director, Jared Gellert’s address to the graduates. 

“Thank you all for coming.  Deputy Chancellor Gibson, Dean Quigley, Department Chair White, Professors Drs. Alemu, Bradley, Smith  and Zakierski, thank you for all the hard work you’ve done to get everyone to this point.

I’ll be brief.  Besides Professor Alemu has, in his precise way, allotted me exactly 5 minutes. I’m only going to take 2 of them.

Leadership matters.  We don’t have enough of it in our schools, our communities, our world.  Organizations in very similar circumstances can have really different outcomes, depending upon your leadership.  That makes leadership an awesome, in the original sense of the word, responsibility and privilege.  Awesome because leadership is a sacred privilege that reveals to us something that is beyond ourselves and is scary, intoxicating and very, very powerful.

There are two aspects of leadership that are sometimes underestimated.  The first is that the ability to learn is a key aspect of leadership.  The world around us is changing at a disorienting pace.  Some things that worked 10 years ago still work, and some don’t.  How do we know which is which?  We have to pay attention, we have to read, we have to think—in short we have to learn.

The second aspect is that perseverance really matters.  There’s a lot of fairly new research correlating what some scholars call “grit” with success in school and in life. Being able to keep going, especially when things don’t go easily, is essential in accomplishing any movement in an organization.

Everyone we are going to hear from today has demonstrated both the ability to learn and the ability to persevere.  These abilities will serve you well as you take on more and more leadership in your careers.  Congratulations to all of you.
